Symptom

  • How do I change my EVAL (evaluation) Palo Alto Networks VM-Series Firewall to a production firewall?
  • How do I move an instance from one hypervisor to another hypervisor?
  • Can you convert a Pay-as-you-go (PAYG) license VM to a BYOL license on AWS?
  • We have already provisioned AWS VMs and they are up. Do we need to spin up different vms or can we convert the existing ones?
  • Can you convert a Pay-as-you-go (PAYG) license from hourly to annual in the AWS portal?

Resolution

  • To change from eval (a BYOL license) to full production (another BYOL license) you just delicense the eval and then add the production license.

  • To move a BYOL license from one hypervisor to another:
    • Use the deregister and manually download the license token
    • Then upload that to the license portal to re-gain the entitlement. Now you can use the same authcode again.

  • You cannot convert between BYOL and PAYG (and vice versa). You have to move the configuration into a newly spawned instance.
  • When upgrading your PAYG license from hourly to annual or vice versa the version will appear incorrect during the upgrade process. As directed by AWS support disregard the version mismatch and proceed with the upgrade and it will apply successfully.
