Thanks for reaching out.

Expedition1 could only run in ubuntu 20.04 VM. The Ubuntu VM on VMWare is not working on Apple M1 chipsets.

Instead you can use some emulator to emulate x86_64 based OS on the M1 Apple Silicon Mac.

As for example, but not limited to UTM. Note: Expedition team is not offering support to any Emulator tool.

Another option is to join to the Expedition2 beta program and start using the container based installation supporting M1 chipsets. Please follow the instructions defined in below article:
