Do you mean "TLS" as in "Transport Layer Security"

If tsl is a typo for tls, when I tcpdump the connection I don't see any attempts to start TLS.

Yes, it is a typo.

We will update the view to write it correctly as "tsl".

The library should be using the tsl if it is demanded. So, either I missed notifying the library correctly that tsl has been selected, or the settings of the connection have not been correctly saved to "remember" we want to use tsl.

Can you verify that the tsl field is marked as checked for your server settings?
