Is Palo Alto dependent on file extentions for its content ID logic ?

If I rename a image.jpg file to image.random will Palo Alto be able to detect that the content is Jpeg ?

In additon to that , assuming that Palo alto can detect files without extentions: Is there any way it could detect content within compressed file. e.g. I wanted to say I should not be able to send any image files , compressed or uncompressed, but would like to allow excel files that are compressed (using winzip or 7zp or another common compression tool).

Hi Sunil,

Our file detection logic is independent of file extension so in your case if the file is renamed as image.random we will detect it as JPEG file.

Hi Sunil,

First, a quick correction on my previous reply.... currently we don't detect jpeg files though the comment about not looking at file extension to determine file type still holds.

To your second question, we do detect files that may be compressed (.zip or .gz).

Thanks for your reply. To further my second question, can I set a rule to say that Block all ZIP files but let them through if the ZIP contians .docx files ?

Hi Sunil,

That is not possible for now. Once you block zip files, all zip files (irrespective of the zipped content inside) will be blocked.
