Greetings! Over time we have collected a variety of user naming formats. For example, domain\user, subdomain\user, user, user@domain and so on. Is there a way to make these names consistent, allowing us to use policies for them effectively?

Thanks!

Hi @cloughr ,

Absolutely! There are a few key fields to consider.

For group mapping, the Primary Username field is what is used to identify the user, regardless of the format the User-ID source provides (step 3, #4 https://docs.paloaltonetworks.com/pan-os/10-1/pan-os-admin/user-id/deploy-user-id-in-a-large-scale-network/deploy-user-id-for-numerous-mapping-information-sources/configure-user-id-for-numerous-mapping-information-sources).

For consistency in domain naming, ensure the User Domain specified in the Authentication Profile and the Group Mapping is the same.

You can also use the Username Modifier in the authentication profile to format the username. For example, mine is "%USERINPUT%@%USERDOMAIN%" and that works whether the user enters the username or "username@domain" to login.

The CLI provides an excellent way to check and see if the format of the username matches for (1) IP mappings and (2) group mappings. The format of the username must match exactly for the user to be mapped to the group.

Identify the LDAP group name (show user group list).

Identify the users in the group (show user group name "paste group name here").

Identify the users mapped to IPs (show user ip-user-mapping all).

Thanks,

Tom
