What does the configd process do for PAN-OS?

I'm documenting new services in PAN-OS present in 10.x. What does the configd process do? It appears to bind to udp/28879 (if only accessible "internally"). I do not see this service described in the Commonly Used Processes/Daemons url found here:

For configd, generally speaking, its involved in the commit process, but I believe there is more to it than that. I'll reach out to see if I can get answers for you.

Also configd is used to access the PA via GUI and CLI.

If configd process is stuck or not working, then you will be unable to access PA via GUI or CLI.

Yes, it is also involved in commit process.

Also, configd is used in Configuration related operation like revert config, push config to firewall, save config to disk and policy optimizer.
