Hi all,

We are in the process of re-designing our network topology and I have a question regarding the placement of our Internet firewall:

- place the PA firewall directly on the Internet (with default gateway pointing directly to the ISP's gateway)

- place the PA (using private address) behind an Internet edge router owned by us which is pointing to the ISP Internet gateway?

Which is the best practice (I presume the latter but want to confirm)? Any comments are welcome

Hello Sir,

As per my practical experience, most of the customers use their firewall at the edge, which will directly connect with ISP gateway ( you can terminate IPSec tunnel directly to the PAN FW). So, that you will be able to prevent all unwanted traffic at the beginning ( threat prevention, anti-virus, vulnerability, spyware). But if you are running dynamic routing protocols i.e BGP and there is a large route table, then you can place the PAN firewall behind the internet edge to reduce the load.

Thanks
