I was hoping that Palo will implement GRE tunnels which would make everything much simpler.

Hi

Is it possible to terminate GRE tunnels on PAN device?

I'm planning to have multiple IPSec tunnels from all branch offices connecting to PA-2020 firewall, in each of these I would like to have GRE tunnel and then OSPF running, so in short: GRE over IPsec + OSPF. Is it possible? Apparently OSPF over IPSec is supported 'out of the box' on PAN OS, but if the other site is not a PAN divece, how would I accomplish that?

Hi Slawek,

It is not currently possible to terminate GRE tunnels on a Palo Alto Device. However, here is a good document on how to run OSPF over an IPSec tunnel:

https://live.paloaltonetworks.com/docs/DOC-1586

Both OSPF and IPSec are standards based. So assuming the other side can match the configuration option, which in theory it should be able to, then you'll have a working solution.

Many Thanks

James

Hi Slawek,

Good point, I should have calrified that the "other end" can be any vendor (that support IPSec and OSPF). I meant to imply this by talking about standards based protocols.

I can understand that GRE could be desirable in some instances. Currently, we support IPSec and OSPF which will also be supported by the majority of VPN end points.

I expect the work flow would be:

Establish an IPSec tunnel between the Palo Alto Device and 'Other Vendor' Device

Establish an OSPF neighbour relationship between devices

Of course very high level, as you have the document to refer to.

If you need any further information, please let us know

Thanks

James

Hello everyone.

I hate to resurrect old threads.. but I figured that it would be beneficial in this case.

Yes, we did not support support GRE tunnels in the past.

But, now with the release of PAN-OS 9.0, GRE tunnels are now supported.

For all of the info on using GRE tunnels, please see here:

PAN-OS® Administrator’s Guide - GRE Tunnels

Hi, Jdelio

Thanks for this update, however I have a question about GRE Tunnels and Azure.

Can we connect to Azure VNET using a GRE Tunnel? Or does it require a third party device that supports GRE Tunnels?

Thanks.

ed

Pretty confident that you would connect to Azure using a traditional IPSec tunnel, not GRE.
