Hi Team,

I hope ye are well. Can we get a KB article on Palo Alto Networks recommendation regarding inter-vsys routing ?

Given that inter-vsys routed sessions never get off loaded and can have a cost against the dp, is using basic cabling best option between interfaces or letting up/downstream switch handle the routing between vsys ?

There has been a few article on same, but would be nice when explaining to customer one that details this and we don't have to reference 2 articles, and one is not even an article but a forum post.

Can we get something official back on same ?

namely ones below

https://live.paloaltonetworks.com/t5/General-Topics/Inter-Vsys-Routing/m-p/147277#M49355

https://knowledgebase.paloaltonetworks.com/KCSArticleDetail?id=kA10g000000ClWFCA0

cheers

Rob

You want to use a router external to the Firewall. There is a "shared-gateway" feature you can use but it takes "slow-path" and is limited to 1.25Gbit and really wasn't intended for this purpose.

PS - There was no official documentation when I was fighting this a couple years ago. Pretty sure nothing has changed.

Thanks Jeremy,

Yea all slow path if using the shared gateway which is resource heavy of course. Running into a few scenarios where this is a surprise to customers and alteration of the topology needed. We really need this detailed in a KB article if at all possible or mentioned on the tech docs as an fyi.

It should IMO be included on the details of the external zone at the link below

https://docs.paloaltonetworks.com/pan-os/9-1/pan-os-admin/virtual-systems/communication-between-virtual-systems/inter-vsys-traffic-that-remains-within-the-firewall/external-zone.html

cheers

Rob
