Hi Palo Alto Experts,

I want to know if we want to log SMB URL Blocked events then can we do in Palo Alto or not? Basically, the requirement is as below:

Example URL if typed by compromise system is: smb://www.example.com/fileshare/malware.exe

Right now I am only able to see Source IP, destination IP and Port, NAT information but full logging would be more helpful if achievable over Palo Alto Device. If yes then how can see these events be logged?

Many Thanks.

I'm not aware of any way for the firewall to log the actual path. Generally speaking however you wouldn't allow a direct SMB connection like that to any external hosts unless you've specifically setup a rule to a specific resource.

I agree that outbound SMB connections should not be allowed but this can apply within the internal network. Within internal networks, SMB is allowed for file share purpose. One issue which can impact logs is SMB 3.0 is encrypted by default but If I am not wrong then it's not like HTTPS where we cannot see URI until the traffic inspection is happening, in SMB, File share and URL is in cleartext.
