BGP Import Set Origin (why required?)

L1 Bithead

Why is it required that I set the origin on a BGP import policy?  Can't I just accept the origin value sent from my peer?

What I'm talking about is in:

Network > Virtual Routers > "my virtual router" > BGP > Import > "my import policy" > Action: Origin

Why do I have to choose a value (igp, egp, incomplete) here?

Origin isn't really used for its original purpose any more, but can be useful to influence traffic in either direction.  Typically, with Juniper and Cisco devices, I would never modify origin on an import policy.

Can someone with more PA experience explain why this setting this way here?

Thanks!
