DNS Security packet flow

L0 Member

Hi,

I'm still testing DNS Security on a lab 220 before I deploy it to production and have one major question left.

What exactly is the device doing when it receives an unknown query? The query response times are too fast for it to be sending it to the cloud and back. It seems almost guaranteed that there is an on-device model being run, at least for DGA's

This is fine, but the marketing material like the following youtube video imply the request is being sent to the cloud.

As a separate note, my other outstanding question is regarding the dns-cache itself. I can see that the third TTL value is the 'time since last seen' as it resets when the traffic arrives at the device, but...what are the other values?

admin@PA-220> debug dataplane show dns-cache print | match <removed>
<removed>, wildcard: no, ttl: 300/1314392/0, temp: 0, verdict C2, utid: <removed>
admin@PA-220> debug dataplane show dns-cache print | match <removed>
<removed>, wildcard: no, ttl: 300/1314780/299, temp: 0, verdict C2, utid: <removed>

Thank you,
