I regularly update the OS to the next recommended version every other month, and I was wondering if there was anything that has to be done to clean up the hard drive so as not to run out of space?

Deleteing old mp-log files and pcap information is always going to give you back a fair amount of space depending on if you actaully use the feature or not. To be honest I'm still kinda confused on why you wanted to get space back; I mean it didn't look like you were really running low on disk space or anything?

Well correct my space appears to be fine at this time, I guess I was just doing preventive maintenance making sure I had a plan in place and understood what was going on and how to manange rather than waiting til if filled up and I had to scurry to fix it LOL
