Overview

The WF-500 appliance is equipped with a ‘console’ DB-9 serial port for console access. It is recommended to access the console port using a portable workstation and the Palo Alto Networks DB-9 serial port cabled supplied with the shipment of the appliance. If the supplied Palo Alto Networks DB-9 serial cable is not available, a generic female to female DB-9 serial port cable with a USB to Male DB-9 serial port adapter may be used for this procedure.

Required equipment

  • Supplied Palo Alto Networks DB-9 serial cable or generic female to female DB-9 serial port cable with a USB to Male DB-9 serial port adapter.
  • Portable Windows, Apple or Linux workstation.
  • Preinstalled SSH software or terminal emulation application.

Note: Some vendor specific DB-9 serial cables may not display clear output or syntax from keystrokes. Software driver installation for the USB to Male DB-9 serial port adapter may be required prior to connection.

Steps

  1. Connect the preconfigured DB-9 serial port connection cable to the portable workstation.
  2. Connect the opposite end of the DB-9 serial port connection cable to the serial port of the WF-500 appliance.
  3. Launch the preinstalled SSH software or terminal emulation application on the portable workstation and confirm there is a login prompt on screen. (A few space bar keystrokes may be necessary).
  4. Press the ‘reset’ button below the power button to reboot the device.
  5. Monitor the SSH session for the bootstrap process and ready for the option to enter ‘maint’ mode.
  6. Type ‘maint’ at the prompt to inter in to the maintenance mode.
  7. Select the “Factory Restore” option from the menu to restore the appliance.
  8. Reboot the device after the restore is complete.
  9. Disconnect the serial DB-9 serial cable connection.

The device is now reset back to factory settings and clear of all previous configurations.
