Issue

When a device's physical interface is set manually down, or is physically disconnected with a configuration of PPPoE, the device will continually logĀ  PPPoE related errors every 3 seconds.

Example Log events

initiateethernet1/400generalinformationalPPPoE session was initiated for user:rwwa on interface:ethernet1/4
connect-failethernet1/400generalinformationalPPPoE session failed to connect for user:foo on interface:ethernet1/4. Reason: No PPPoE Offer received

Resolution

This is the expected behavior for the PPPoE configured interfaces. A manual interface down or an unplugged cable can be a temporary state, such as for maintenance or when a cable is being swapped, the logic is to keep trying so if the condition is rectified. Once the link is available, we connect as quickly as possible.

To avoid these log events from being present in the System logs (Monitor > System), disable the PPPoE instance from the UI or CLI.

Note: Versions of PAN-OS previous to 5.0.x do not include configuration options for PPPoE.
