Panorama 11.x - Recommended AWS EC2 instance

L3 Networker

Hi,

Panorama version 11.0 and above  has a recommended minimum memory size of 64Gb.   AWS Marketplace shows the recommended EC2 as c4.4xlarge (Vendor Recommended), which only had 30GB of memory. Based on v11 requirements, the C4.4xlarge being the recommended instance type is probably not correct.

I am curious to see what instance type others are using for Panorama

I wouldn't recommend running with an instance of less than 64GBs of memory. 64GBs of memory is the minimum for memory with 11.0 and not meeting that requirement means that you run the risk of it entering maintenance mode since the minimum requirement isn't met. I think you're likely getting around that here because you upgraded instead of did a direct install, but it is the risk that you're carrying by not meeting the minimum requirements.

This shouldn't be working per PAN's documentation. Your instance should have went into maintenance mode as soon as you upgraded it because you didn't meet the minimum requirement. While I wouldn't personally introduce that risk to save costs, it's more about risk calculation for your business.

If Panorama went into maintenance mode how big of an impact would that actually cause until you modified the instance type? Do you have individuals in the organization that can increase the instance type if needed outside of just yourself in the event that you weren't available? This may be an acceptable mode of operation for your organization, and if it is there's no reason to upgrade the instance type until you're forced to.

Hi @BPry

Thanks for the response. I agree to run the recommendation.  I was just surprised to see the "vendor recommended" instance for 11.1 to be an instance that has less than 64.   I was also surprised that I did not see a warning in Panorama

I have since changed the instance type to be M5.4xlarge  (16 CPU, 64GB memory)
