The move to the cloud has made many things very convenient—including users' ability to collaborate, share data, and get work done from anywhere in the world. Palo Alto Networks SaaS applications travel with their users, wherever they go, as long as there's an internet connection.

But this monumental change to the way we work isn't all sunshine and roses. Migrating from the traditional workspace to the cloud comes with its own risks and challenges. There’s an abundance of SaaS apps available, but they're often unsanctioned by your organization, creating a problem called SHADOW IT. Internal Information Technology teams lack control and visibility over these applications, which are often overused and end up oversharing sensitive data in the cloud. Many remote employees end up connecting directly to both corporate and unsanctioned apps—without using their company VPN—using a personal, unmanaged device. This results in a security gap and puts your organization at risk.

Shadow IT is the use of IT systems, devices, software, applications, and services outside the control of your IT organization.

Data privacy is at top of mind for both the employer and employee right now—but faces more hurdles than ever before. Keeping sensitive information secure from data breaches in a compliant manner has become quite a challenge for companies, who are responsible for ensuring data is not overshared or overexposed in the cloud. The constant growth of new cloud apps make it difficult for IT teams to monitor non-compliant data transfers made by employees working remotely.

Security offered by traditional SaaS providers lead to complex security environments that differ from provider-to-provider or even app-to-app. Their security capabilities are often basic, disjointed, and result in security gaps, unmanageability, and inconsistencies.

Palo Alto Networks SaaS Security with Integrated CASB that keeps pace with the SaaS explosion addresses all of these challenges by constantly protecting users, data and apps across all networks and clouds.

Palo Alto Networks SaaS Security specifically provides the following security features:

  • Continuous discovery and control of new apps as they become popular to keep up with the SaaS explosion. Traditional CASBs often rely on manually created signature libraries and cannot keep up with the SaaS explosion, because they neither have an automated classification engine nor sufficient intelligence to reliably identify new applications.
  • DLP and compliance consistent across all SaaS apps, networks and users. Tools from different vendors, such as a standalone cloud access security broker (CASB), a secure web gateway (SWG), and cloud date loss protection (DLP), are disjointed from one another as well as the company's existing on-prem security deployments.
  • Prevent threats in real time with ML-based attack prevention without third-party tools. SaaS Security extends the NGFW security services to SaaS applications inline via API with deep application visibility, segmentation, secure access and threat prevention.
  • Easy-to-deploy and low TCO compared to legacy CASBs. Traditional CASBs are complex to deploy and require high total cost of ownership (TCO) for their composite architecture. They lack strong integration with other security tools and require complicated traffic redirection from the firewall and rely on PAC files.
