Come and join us as we celebrate Women’s History Month! We pay tribute to the courageous pathfinders and pioneers who paved the way before us, as well as those who are currently advocating for a more just and equitable society.

While International Women's Day was initially observed on March 8, 1911, the concept of Women's History Month originated from a Women's History Week, first observed in 1978. Just two years later, in 1980, March was officially designated as Women's History Month.

Throughout this entire month, we take the time to acknowledge the remarkable progress women have achieved over the years and continue to strive for around the globe.

As we celebrate, we have the wonderful opportunity to connect with a female colleague here at Palo Alto Networks, Susmita Pati, Senior Product Manager, Customer Experience (CX). Sharing her experiences and advice with all of you, Susmita continues to inspire others in the workplace, and we are excited for you to learn more about her!

LIVEcommunity Team: How long have you been working in IT/cybersecurity, and how did you get into the field? Can you talk a bit about what it’s like to be a woman in a historically male-dominated field, and how the industry has changed?

Susmita: I have more than 20 years of experience in Technology. My fascination with technology began during my early years, igniting a passion that ultimately drove me to pursue a Master's degree in Computer Science.

As a woman in the field of technology, I've witnessed firsthand underrepresentation of women in this industry. This lack ofWomens QA_Susmita P_palo-alto-networks.png representation has posed significant challenges for women striving to advance in their careers. While there's a noticeable shift towards challenging traditional gender norms and fostering inclusivity in workplaces, there's still a considerable journey ahead of us to achieve true equality.

LIVEcommunity Team: How do you think women have shaped and changed the workplace / PANW?

Susmita: Women have advocated for and promoted diversity and inclusion in the workplace. Their presence has led to more diverse perspectives, ideas, and approaches to problem-solving, which can enhance innovation and creativity within organizations. I feel at PANW also women have broken barriers and risen to leadership positions across various departments. Their leadership styles often emphasize collaboration, empathy, and inclusivity, which can contribute to more effective and supportive work environments.

LIVEcommunity Team: Who are the women you look up to? Are there any important mentors or influences in your professional or personal life you’d like to share with us?

Susmita: Family members, such as my mother and aunts, play significant roles in my life and serve as invaluable sources of inspiration. Some of my previous female  managers continue to be my mentors and provide valuable advice on leadership, decision-making, and navigating the workplace.

LIVEcommunity Team: Do you have any morning routines or rituals that are essential for you? Alternatively, what's one practice you engage in to kickstart your day for success?

Susmita: I strive to make morning gym sessions a priority, although some days present challenges that make it difficult to follow through.

LIVEcommunity Team: What’s your favorite part of your job?

Susmita: As a product manager one favorite aspect is the opportunity to drive innovation. Product managers often have a significant influence on the development and direction of products or services. They get to work closely with cross-functional teams, including engineers, designers, to bring ideas to life and solve customer problems.

LIVEcommunity Team: Where will we find you on the weekend?

Susmita: I enjoy spending my weekends hiking or being close to nature!  Exploring trails, taking in the beauty of the outdoors, and connecting with nature - just to rejuvenate.

LIVEcommunity Team: What’s one piece of advice you would give your younger self?

Susmita: If I were to offer advice to my younger self, it would be to embrace failure and setbacks as opportunities for growth rather than sources of discouragement. Understand that setbacks are a natural part of the learning process and that resilience and perseverance are essential qualities for success.

LIVEcommunity Team: What else would you like to mention to readers?

Susmita: Trust in your abilities, stay true to your passions, and never underestimate the power of continuous learning and self-improvement.
