Today, February 8, 2022 is Safer Internet Day!

Over the years, Safer Internet Day has become a landmark event in the online safety calendar.

According to the https://www.saferinternetday.org/, "from cyberbullying to social networking to digital identity, each year Safer Internet Day aims to raise awareness of emerging online issues and current concerns."

The LIVEcommunity has put together five tips to help you have a safer internet experience.

1. Trust no one

The most important tip seems very simple; don't trust anyone when you use the internet. Contacts can be infected with a virus and can just send you a link or an email, check whether this person could have written it himself.

2. Use antivirus software at all times

A virus can cause a lot of damage to your computer, so it is highly recommended to install an antivirus program. Antivirus programs ensure that everything you do on the internet is monitored.

3. Have a good firewall

With a good firewall you can prevent most 'attacks'. Do take the time to properly set up the firewall, so that the attack surface is minimal.

4. Give updates a chance

It is tempting to keep putting off mandatory updates. Criminals are constantly inventing new ways to infect your computer with malicious software. In an update, among other things, new viruses are detected that could not be detected in the old version. So make sure to update and minimize the chance of becoming a target.

5. Always check whether the address is correct before entering your (login) details

When you go to a website and enter (login) data, check beforehand whether the web address is correct. It is quite possible that you have entered the address incorrectly, which will lead you to a decoy site. These decoy sites are created by criminals with the sole intention of getting their hands on your (login) details.
