Template vs Device Group

L2 Linker

Hello All - I am fundamentally not understanding the difference between Template and Device Group.  Using teamplate i can push a policy to multiple Firewalls.  Looks Device Group also does the same thing.

What is the difference, and use case. When to use template and on what scenario i have to use Device Group? Thanks

Hi @KumarRamalinga

  • Templates are used to push network and devicesettings to a firewall
  • Device groups are used to push policy and object configurations to a firewall or vsys

So to fully manage a firewall with panorama you need both.

In Panorama, just above the list of tabs, there's a heading that shows you which tabs belong to Templates and which tabs belong to Device Groups.  IOW, any changes on those tabs are only pushed out when you tell it to include the Template or Device Group.

Any changes you make under the Policies or Objects tabs will be part of the Template setting.
