Windows Defender is not getting replaced by Cortex XDR

L1 Bithead

We have experienced subjected issue on few VMs running on Windows server operating system. As per my usual experience, once we install Cortex XDR on a Windows machine, Windows defender is getting replaced by Cortex XDR right? But it is not happening in a few servers.

@DS1465,

This shouldn't be automatically disabled on anything running a server version of Windows. Defender should only ever be shutdown on a normal endpoint, but by design Windows Server doesn't do the same thing.

Now PAN recommends that you manually disable or remove Windows Defender from Windows Server, but that isn't something that will happen automatically. My guess on your description would be that there's likely a GPO setup to deactivate Defender that isn't automatically being updated when new machines are being built.
