Regarding existing logs when adding an extended disk to a VMFW using AWS.

L4 Transporter

We are considering adding (expanding) disk space. Previously, when we inquired with the manufacturer, we were told that, unlike ESXi, logs from the initial disk would not be automatically migrated when an expansion disk was added to a VMFW on AWS. However, the manufacturer representative who responded yesterday stated that the logs would be automatically migrated.

We also inquired about the behavior when adding an expansion disk a second time, and received the following response:

1. Question: If a disk is added to a VM series (normally 60GB capacity), will existing logs be lost?

Answer: They will be automatically migrated to the new expansion disk (e.g., 100GB).

2. Question: If a disk is further expanded in a VMFW that already has disk expansion, will existing logs be lost? For example, if a 500GB disk is added to an environment that already has a 100GB disk, what happens to the logs stored on the 100GB disk?

Answer: The logs will not be deleted, but they will not be automatically migrated either. As long as the 100GB disk is mounted, the logs stored there will remain accessible.

3. Question: Is it possible to avoid log loss by adding a partitioned disk?

Answer: No. This is not supported.

4. Question: Is there a way to add a disk without losing existing logs?

Answer: As mentioned in 2, logs will not be lost.

5. Question: Is there a way to manually move logs to the new disk?

Answer: No. Please move logs to an external server (Panorama or Syslog).

---------------

After checking several knowledge articles and community pages, I found that "adding an expansion disk in AWS unmounts the existing disk, and the existing expansion disk becomes unrecognized (becomes unused space)." It also states that "only one expansion disk is supported," which contradicts the manufacturer's response. What is the actual situation?

Also, one page (an ESXi page, not AWS) stated that "when adding a new expansion disk, you can export logs from the existing disk and import them to the new expansion disk."
Is this possible in AWS as well?

I don't have an AWS environment to test this, so I'd appreciate any advice from anyone who knows about this.
