How to create Business Units?

L0 Member

Hello, Team.

I want to add new assets to my XSIAM deployment. I found that this can be done by creating a special CSV file (https://docs-cortex.paloaltonetworks.com/r/Cortex-XSIAM/Cortex-XSIAM-3.x-Documentation/Upload-or-rem...).

However, the “Business Units” column is required in this table. But we don’t have any Business Units (we can download and review the list; I checked—ours list is empty).

So what should we do if we need to add assets? How do we create new Business Units?

Hello @Y.Hrushchynskyi ,

Greetings for the day.

In Cortex XSIAM, Business Units (BUs) cannot be created manually by users or administrators through the Management Console. Business Units are part of the Attack Surface Management (ASM) module and are established during the onboarding and asset attribution process.

(How to Create New Business Units)

To add new Business Units to your tenant, you should coordinate with your Customer Success Engineer (CSE) or Account Team.

The standard process is as follows:

  1. Define the Scope
    • Provide the list of Business Units, domains, and IP ranges that should be associated with your organization.
  2. Asset Mapping
    • The provided assets are validated and mapped to the appropriate Business Units.
  3. Synchronization
    • Once the mapping process is completed, the Business Units will become available within the Asset Management and Asset Inventory sections of the platform.

Why the Business Unit List May Be Empty:

If the Business Unit list is currently empty, it is typically due to one of the following reasons:

  • Initial ASM Onboarding Not Completed
    • The ASM module requires an initial onboarding and asset attribution process before Business Units can be populated.
  • Provisioning or Configuration Issue
    • In some cases, tenant provisioning or configuration issues may prevent Business Units from appearing in the console.

(Recommendation for Adding Assets)

-Since the Business Unit field is required when performing bulk asset uploads, you will not be able to proceed with the upload until at least one Business Unit has been provisioned and is visible in the console.

-If onboarding has not yet been completed, please contact your Customer Success Engineer or Account Team to initiate the process. If onboarding has already been completed and the list remains empty, it is recommended to open a technical support case for further investigation.
