Difference Between PA-500 and PA-5000 series

L0 Member

I am trying to understand the difference between PA-500 and PA-5000 series Firewall on Hardware level. Means with respect to Dataplane and Management plane.

Those two models are miles apart in what they can handle. Easiest is to compare the datasheets or they will provide a picture explaining the number of chips the 5060 has extra compared to the 500. I believe the 5060 has 3 chips for security processing while the 500 has 1.  They also have multiple dataplanes in the 5060 while the 500 has one.

@sullivanpj2 I would say is almost understating it at this point. Someone that would be even really looking at a 5000 series wouldn't be able to even 'get by' with a 500. I think you likely would be better suited comparing the 500 to something like the new 820 or 850, maybe make the jump to a 3020/3060 but either the 820 or 850 should work if you are looking at the 500 currently.

The difference between the two...

About $100,000.00

To get to the technical differences, the 500 series box is a "small office" platform while the 5000 series is designed for an enterprise enviornment.

PA-500 was made for customers who don't have 2U space in their racks which PA-5000 requires 🙂

you can use the hardware comparison tool to see the differences, but in this scenario it's comparing apples to racecars 🙂
