Dynamic URL classification, unknown URL's, and PANOS differences

L2 Linker

Hello --

testing PAN/brightcloud URL filtering on two different PAN boxes -- PA500 and PA2020.

both policies have dymanic URL classification enabled.

one box running PANOS 3.1.8 and other PANOS 4.0.2

sample URL:    http://www.bankofkremlin.com

online lookup at http://www.brightcloud.com show URL classifed.

PANOS 4.0.2 shows URL classified.

PANOS 3.1.8 show URL as unknown

both boxes have latest brightcloud db (3607 as of last night).

any ideas why the discreptency between the two PAN boxes?

3.1.8 suffers from an issue where PAN can start classifying all websites beginning with www as unknown. It was fixed in 3.1.9.

That might be what you are seeing.

wow... sincere thanks for the FYI ... mucho thanks!   the bugid below exactly matches our observed issues.

per 3.1.9 release notes.

• [27709] The URL database inappropriately caches www as an entry, causing subsequent URLs with www to be miscategorized.
