If you're looking for learning material look at https://beacon.paloaltonetworks.com/student/catalog. There's also the FUEL user group virtual lab that you can sign up for to get your hands dirty.
PAN has a 30-day free trial VM series that you could utilize, however it really isn't designed for just learning and playing with. You wouldn't be able to register for it using a personal email address unless you own your own domain. I would look into acquiring some LAB hardware if you're serious about learning the platform to the point where you're willing to spend a couple hundred bucks. There's also the PAYG VMs available through things like AWS or Azure that can get you into the experience for a bit less if you just want to mess around a little bit, but if you're trying to actually truly learn the platform LAB hardware (or a LAB VM) is still the most economical solution.
