Putting a PA-4060 back into service

L0 Member

I recently aquired a PA-4060 from a recycling center. It appears to be fully functional without issue. It's currently on PAN-OS 4.1.12. How can I go about updating this device? I'd like to try and use it in my homelab for learning about Palo Alto products.

To buy a support subscription you need to ask for it at a paloalto partner company because PaloAlto does not sell directly to endusers/customers. But the problem is that I think they no longer sell support subscriptions for PA-4000 series but give it a try, hopefully I am wrong with that.

Hi @Wronglebowski

I hope for you that you did not pay much for this device, because without a support subscription you cannot get updates and have to stay on PAN-OS 4.1.12 which was released somewhere in 2012 I think. Even with a support subscription you would only be able to update up to 7.1 and the final end of support for PA-4000 series ends in april 2019.

So unfortunately you have now a security device which cannot be updated (without a support subscription).

Of course you can play now with the device as it is, but a better alternative would be to buy a new PA-220 or VM-50 with a LAB license.

I didn't pay much for it and I assumed I might need to pay for the support to get the latest software. Is there a way to purchase support online?
