Scanning AntiVirus through SMB

Hi guys,

As a "test" I have isolated one of my test servers so that all traffic flows through the PA-500.

On this test machine I installed IIS and set-up a simple ftp and website

This website folder is also accessible via a share.

The policy rules to and from this test server hold the AntiVirus Security Profile with both http, ftp  and SMB to "default(reset-both)"

In the website folder I placed a couple of EICAR test files (http://www.eicar.org/85-0-Download.html) and tried to see what happens if I download these file via IIS.

The result was, as expected, a block.

This is also the case with FTP. The threat log on the PAN also shows the block.

However, when I copy the file via SMB, the file is not blocked by the PA-500. It is simply copied over.

From what I understand, the PA-500 should also scan SMB traffic for virusses, malware.

What am I not seeing?

Hi Remko,

Are you using SMB 3 at all with server 2012? This adds encryption to SMB traffic so you may need to enable decryption to see it. Are you seeing the SMB session with the file go through the firewall? You could enable a file blocking profile with all actions set to 'alert' to see if the firewall can identify the file.

Excellent. You are absolutly right. I did not realize that SMB3 was encrypted.

When I use a Windows 7 client, the PA-500 indeed blocks the traffic and shows the (test) virus in the threat log.
