Currently have a PA 440 acting if it's still talking to a panorama server which it should not have ever have, I think it may have been due to an issue when I bought last year new. I'm not sure I've attached screenshots for suggestions complaining about merge size etc. I don't have Panorama. I am a very small office.

Your screenshot of the Panorama Settings would indicate that you have servers configured on this device. You'll want to follow https://knowledgebase.paloaltonetworks.com/KCSArticleDetail?id=kA10g000000Cmd6CAC to actually get everything cleared out and turned off properly. Make sure you actually take the backup as it specifies.

Thank you for the article, interestingly enough, the box has never been in panorama. I don't have a instance personally of it even.

This is actually normal, it does not mean your firewall is managed by panorama. It just displays the total size of your configuration after merging all potential individual configs, in between parenthesis ( ) are examples
below is my config:
my local config is 214k, the predefined is 17mn, combined they are 18mb
