PAN-OS Downgrade Resulted in Maintenance Mode with No Error Reason

L1 Bithead

Hello All,

A bit of a weird one here: downgrading PAN-OS on a VM series NGFW from 11.2.0 to 11.1.4-h7. The device continually enters maintenance mode after it reboots to finish the installation process to 11.1.4-h7. The curious part is the maintenance entry reason: "No error entry reason detected". Please see the attached photo for clarity.

I recovered the device by reverting it to PAN-OS 11.2.0, but I am curious as to why the installation failed, and why it continually entered maintenance mode despite having no reason to do so.

Thanks

Hi @nohash4u ,

May I check if you have tried with different PAN-OS version in 11.1.x and if possible to share the device details like in which cloud device deployed and what is the model /mode of the device.

Hello @mshekh ,

Thanks for your response. Unfortunately, I am unable to try other PAN-OS versions at this moment in time. PAN-OS 11.1.4-h7 is currently the preferred release of the 11.1.x branch, and I was unable to find any related issues in 'known / addressed issues' in PA's documentation.

I will not be able to downgrade to another version at this time due to change / outage windows, however, here is some additional information:

  • VM Mode: Microsoft Azure
  • VM Model: PA-VM. 4 cores, 14 GB memory.

I can't help but think the VM may be under provisioned. Regardless, I find the message from maintenance mode is worth a laugh.
