SMB Slowness via PA firewall in Azure Cloud

L0 Member

Hi team,

We have deployed PA VM300 series firewall in Azure US West and Azure US East. When a server from US West tries to copy data of 500 Mb to US East server the maximum transfer rate is between 200 - 500 Kbps. When the same file is copied bypassing the firewall, the file transfer rate is 50~60 Mbps.
Tried configuring MSS settings to the interface & application override but nothing helped.

How is East and West Azure connected?

Are they connected via IPsec? Is IPsec terminated on the firewall?

Is there an Express Route between East and West region?

They are connected via Express route. No VPN terminated in the PA firewalls deployed in Azure Cloud.

What is the latency between the two sides? What we've noticed is that when latency reaches 30-40ms, SMB performance is severely impacted due to the chatty nature of SMB. If you've opened a support case then we can work with you to review the details of your setup and run some tests to diagnose this further.
