How GP selects between SSL and IPSEC?

L1 Bithead

Hi,

I have recently noticed that most of my VPN users with Global Protect are connected with IPSEC.

Before that, two or three weeks ago, they were mostly connected with SSL.

How can it be like that?

Is it related to some parameters on our PA-5020 (PAN-OS : 5.0.5)?

Thanks for your help.

Regards,

Sylvain Fouqueray

Hi Sylvian,

When you connect to a gateway externally, its always through a tunnel, ie via IPSEC. We however have the option to select connecting via either tunnel or SSL, when connecting to a gateway internally. By default, its SSL for connecting to an internal gateway.

You can find the information about it from the Global Protect tech notes. I have added a few lines from it for your reference:

The GlobalProtect Gateway provides the endpoint for the Agent’s connection. Once the agent is connected, it sends all traffic through the Gateway. The Gateway(s) can be either external gateways or internal Gateways. External gateways require a tunnel. Internal gateways do not require tunnel.

IPSec connection uses UDP port 4501. The GlobalProtect client will fall back to using SSL to connect to gateways if the gateway does not respond to the first 3 keep alive packets.

you have to define it, by clic on enable ipsec to enable ipssec  in global protect gateway in client configuration

Ok, that's clear. Thank you.
