using outputs of subplaybook requires creating custom fields. Or can this be done differently?

Fields are not required to capture outputs, unless you want to explicitly map the output of a task using the 'field mapping' utility found under the Mapping tab in the task pane. https://xsoar.pan.dev/docs/playbooks/playbooks-inputs-outputs
