If yes, why do we get these error messages?

Yes, Panorama can manage any currently supported PAN-OS version that is the same or a lower release. It cannot manage firewalls running greater PAN-OS versions than itself (eg. 4.1 Panorama cannot manage 5.0 boxes).

Please take a look at "less mp-log ms.log" on the device to get more information about the error. There should be details around what part of the config is causing the issue. If you cannot figure it out from the messages then please call support and open a case for investigation.

We've not opened a case on this as of yet, but I believe this issue appeared in Panorama v5.0.4

We didn't see it at all in 5.0.3.

As mschuricht said, yes a 5.04 Panorama server can manage a 4.1.x firewall.  Keep in mind though that Panorama version 5.0 introduced templates, and these templates will not work with PAN-OS versions less than 5.0.  These templates allow you to push "network" and "device" settings to groups of PAN-OS devices, as well as the "shared policies and objects".

Here is a document explaining templates: Panorama-Templates.pdf.

It is possible to run into issues where you have inadvertently misconfigured either the device or Panorama as well, so if you have issues that are not readily apparent in the ms.log or commit failure messages (as mschuricht said), please open a case with Support and they can help.
