Downgrade from 9.0.2 to 8.1.8

is the right approach to simply download and install 8.1.0 and then download and install 8.1.8? Are there any "gotchas" i should be aware of?

Yes!

follow the same upgrade process but in reverse order. Follow the below KB article step number 7 for downgrade.
