ping from vr

L0 Member

All, is there an easy way to designate a vr as aq source when pinging ? Like ping host a.b.c.d virtual-router myvr ?

So far I only found a way to specify a source interface but the I need first look up a source interface in the specific VR. Any easier way ?

the >ping host a.b.c.d is sourced from the management interface by default (the only interface available to the management plane, with only a single default route)

only if you set a source IP will the management go looking for an IP to bind to on the dataplane

A ping can only be sourced from a legitimate IP address so you need to select one which will then automatically bind to the appropriate VR, but you can't select the VR manually since it does not have it's own IP

Thanks for the quick answer.

What I don't understand here, is that "ping host a.b.c.d" is a valid command without a source, so I assume the source gets auto selected based on route table, just like in case of a router. If that works, why does the same not work for a specific VR ? By the way, I also wonder which route table is used for the first case ?

got it, thank you.

But...as a feature request it would be very nice to have Pan OS to look into the the given VR's routing table to decide source interface and hence source ip. Jut like a router would do. So eventually we could have "ping host a.b.c.d virtual-router xy".

If you rewch out to your local sales SE, they can submit a feature request for you 🙂
