QoS policies

hi!

i have a question regarding the QoS feature, so here goes:

the scenario is the following - we have 2 apps for which we would like to limit the bandwidth, lets say app1 and app2. we have edited one of the QoS classes in the default QoS profile, class 3, and set the max guaranteed bandwidth to 2Mbps.

the next step would be to create the QoS policy, and here lies my question - because there are 2 options:

option A:

- create a single policy with both app1 and app2

option B:

- create two policies, one for app1 and the second for app2

What will happen with the bandwidth configured for class 3, will it be shared between app1 and app2 or will every app individually have 2Mbps max?

Thank You!

Bandwidth configured for a class will be shared by the traffic hitting that class.

so i would have to use up 2 classes for app1 and app2 with the same bandwidth? that seems very unpractical and a waste of very limited resources, as we only have 8 available classes....

No, you do not have to create class for each application, by classifying an application to a class (multiple applications can be classified to one class). Traffic/applications that belongs to one class will be put in a queue for that class for utilizing the bandwidth, eg. you can classify youtube and netflix as class 3 and say that maximum guaranteed is 2 mbps. This 2 mbps will be shared by these applications, this does not necessarily mean youtube will get 1 mpbs and 1mpbs for netflix. If no one is using netflix youtube traffic will get 2 mbps.

Hope that helps.

Regards,

Deepak
