I had an issue where mgmt server and device srvr both where high in memory usage and commits where not taking place.
I issued the following commands
debug software restart device-server
debug software restart management-server
with no change except that the box was taken out of panorama and from the cli. you were unable to get info
show session info was blank
This is an Active/Passive HA
I issued the command
request restart software.
Does the drop all current sessions through the dataplane?

Hi,
When restarting the mangement-server it can take some time(>1min) for the process to fully reinitialize. During this time certain commands that the management server would handle will have output.
This should not cause a disruption on the active sessions passing through the dataplane, only the ability for the commands to pull information.
One way to monitor the status of the process restart is to issue the following command after the restart.
> show system resources follow
This will show the mgmtsrvr process consume large amounts of CPU until initializing has completed. Also worth noting is that any active sessions to the mgmtsrvr will need to be restarted(ssh/webui).

What about userid (such as pan-agent stuff) and url-categories?
When restarting mgmtplane will the rules depending on userid and/or url-categories stop functioning until mgmtplane comes back online or does the dataplane have some kind of own cache so it will still function until mgmtplane is back but based on "old" data?
