I would still follow the current recommendation of downloading and installing the base image, then downloading and installing the target maintenance release. That being said, that recommendation came about because of space constraints in large part due to the smaller/older hardware not having enough space to explode two images on the disk at the same time. With the 3200 and 5200 I wouldn’t expect issues just downloading the base image and proceeding directly to the maintenance release.

So while you would likely be fine by just downloading the base image without installing it, I would always recommend following upgrade recommendations to avoid any issues.

Hi Mike

You only need to download the base and then download and install the maintenance release you want to go to (ie. coming from 7.1.x you would download 8.0.0 and download + install 8.0.12, then reboot

However, it is recommended to download, install and reboot the base and then download, install and reboot the maintenance release

Here are the upgrade best practices:  https://knowledgebase.paloaltonetworks.com/KCSArticleDetail?id=kA10g000000ClRrCAK

@MP18,

To piggyback off of @reaper is saying, since last I heard you were working with a PA-200/220 I would definately recommend you utilize the new recommended process. That's one of the platforms that saw the most issues with the old recommendation.

i was referring this for our prod which had 3200 and 5200.

so on these PA i do not need to install the base version like 8.0 ?
