Why public cloud users did not need Palo Alto before ?

L1 Bithead

Dear all

We can see heavy public cloud users since 2016. But we did not have Palo Alto on public cloud until recent. Does that mean public cloud does not need 3rd party security solutions like Palo Alto? Because if public cloud users really need 3rd party security solutions like Palo Alto, they should not survive 2016-2018, should they? They survived 2016-2018, that means they will continue to be just fine without 3rd party security solutions on public cloud?

The following pages have been there for years, I did not see it mention 3rd party security solutions on AWS are recommended. Does that mean Palo Alto will not be popular in AWS market?

 http://aws.amazon.com/security

Thanks

Steven

Whole networks have survived many years without (modern) firewalls and other security devices. But times and landscape are changing rapidly with many new threats emerging. So now we all agree that (NG)FW is a must. I'd say it will be similar with cloud adoption.

By that logic, cars did not used to have airbags or seatbelts.

As the threat landscape changes over time (to stay with the cars: faster cars and more traffic) new security measures are adopted by a wider audience as security awareness rises

I'm a bit confused at the intent of this post, but I'll bite.

Security in the IT realm is usually extremely lagging in anything dealing with computers or technology...Enter anything dealing with circuits and mother boards (SCADA.)  Security is always an after thought, someone gets burned then companies try to retrofit security into a solution which was built and made functional without security in mind.

It's not that "public cloud needs" Palo Alto FWs...They need security, and the robust security features in the Palo application layer firewall provides that needed security.

For the past 10 years I've heard just move workload to the cloud, "you can connect from anywhere and it just works."  Well yeah it just works because you've got an open service without authentication being broadcast to the whole world.

Palo gives admins the tools they need and should be employing to secure their cloud environments.

Sure there are other technologies and platforms that can also do some or all of what Palo can do, but right now Palo is a pretty clear standout.

Thanks for the reply, The intent is pure tech discussion. I did my research but did not convince myself.

I got your points but did not quite catch "Why public cloud users did not need Palo Alto before ?"

  1. Security awareness rises in public cloud? So public cloud users suffered for years and did not aware. And somehow they begin to aware recently?
  2. Or the 3rd party security solutions needed for years in public cloud but there were technical barriers. And we got big technical breakthrough to enable 3rd party security solutions on public cloud recently?
  3. Or the public cloud providers will not see big cash flow to other’s pocket. Public cloud providers will try to offer their build in public cloud security solutions? So public cloud provider just let 3rd party security solutions in their cloud Market to see whether customers want to pay. And public cloud provider will offer same security solutions once needs are confirmed. By this, there never will be never popular 3rd party solutions in cloud Market place. “Why public cloud users did not need Palo Alto before ?", because the public cloud provider offered (and will offer)all the customer needs once the needs are conformed.
  4. Or ……

The question is that why some of the cars have airbags or seatbelts for years (datacenter), but other cars did not have them (public cloud).

Yes

Technical barriers?  Probably partially...An industry/service was created and security solutions evolved to operate in the new domain/ construct.

Public cloud providers can / do offer "security solutions," but they aren't multi-cloud solutions.  Heck they likely aren't even "multi-product" solutions in the same cloud.  So if you can use a security product that works for multiple applications in a multi-cloud environment that is a much better solution for companies to invest in.  Vice have 4+ different solutions that they need to maintain.
