Is very strange, a have several PAN appliances in Firewall mode, and they working well, but in a couple of branches i have another PAN in virtual wire mode, and when inmediatly connects the appliance the windows live messenger disconnects and re connects constantly, the policies are made for just monitoring the traffic , so the policies are in both directions (trust-untrust, untrust-trust) with any and allow. If possible (since you already run any any allow) try this for debugging:
Rule1) any, any ..., any, allow, log on session start + log on session end.
Rule2) any, any ..., any, deny, log on session start + log on session end. (this rule should never be hit due to how the above rule is constructed).
and then look in traffic log (search on srcip) to see whats actually going on.
My guess is perhaps faulty cabling or faulty interface - like mismatch of speed and/or duplex which ends up with dropped packets and somehow msn doesnt like this.
Do you have ssl-termination running?
