No need for a static route as long as the network is just that /24. The connected interface will be used for that subnet.
When I'm doing a lab or other space that is completely separate, I use different IP space. Maybe a 172.16 so that it's clearly differentiated from anything production. But it's fine to carve out space from a larger block if you're comfortable with it.
