GlobalProtect IP pool exhaustion / overflow to secondary IP pool?

L0 Member

We have 2 IP pools configured for each GlobalProtect gateway to help with IP conflicts. If the first IP pool is exhausted, will the secondary IP pool continue to distribute IP addresses? Due to the recent influx of remote users, I want to make sure we have enough IPs to hand out for the GP clients connecting. If not, I need to increase the primary IP pool today to avoid issues.

The help documents do not answer that question. It only addresses the IP conflict issue.

@pete.castillo ,

This is how PaLo Alto GP works with multiple client pools.

Gateway keeps record of pool from which the last successful IP was taken. The next client will get next available IP from available pool.

Also in case client IP overlaps with address on its physical NIC, so client declines the address.

So firewall receives decline request then it forwards its pointer to 2nd pool and give next available IP from pool2.

And yes, if pool 1 is exausted, firewall will started assigning IP from pool 2.

Hope it helps!

I currently pair of VM500 on active-passive with Global protect on both. Having /21 IP space on each VM500 with a total of 4096 IP addresses to lease (round-robin) to the users who log in to Global Protect VPN. Since the business need is to have another 4000 users to use GlobalProtect, I am planning to add another pair of /21 (Mind that I cannot disturb the existing /21s).

                  VM500-1      VM500-2

Currently       /21                /21 (round-robin)

Addition       /21                 /21 (round-robin)

In this case, Will the IP address from new IP pool (pair of newly to be added /21s) be leased to the users only if the current pair of /21s are exhausted?

@CyrilBIt will work the way it is working for two client pools.
