Tips on configuring a secondary internet connection using Verizon Cradlepoint 4G router (ARC750B)

L1 Bithead

We are a small shop and have a single PA-200 with one internet connection. We would like to add a backup internet connection using a Cradlepoint 4G router. What is the best way to configure this and how do we control the fail over or manually changing to the 4G connection if the primary is down?

The Cradlepoint seems to have built-in failover capabilities but I'm not sure how that integrates with the PA.

BUSINESS CONTINUITY: FAILOVER/FAILBACK

  • Automatic failover to wireless WAN connection when wired WAN disruption occurs, automatic failback when wired WAN connection is restored
  • Proactive alerts when failover occurs through CradlePoint Enterprise Cloud Manager

Any feedback is appreciated!

Thanks,

Emily

Hello EmyB,

Here is the document that explains how to configure PAN for dual ISP failovers:

Dual ISP Branch Office Configuration

The gist is:

1.) Primary Internet uses Policy based forwarding to route Internet traffic. You can have a failover mechanism in the rule where you monitor an IP address, and if that fails - the traffic would look for routes in the routing table.

2.) Secondary Internet (Cradlepoint 4G) uses routing table (static default) route to Internet traffic

Hope that helps!
