Did anyone recently observed that the engines are failing to connect with a reason saying "update required"? It should be get updated automatically since those are shell based.

Engines will not upgrade automatically regardless of the installer used. What the shell installer does allow you to do is upgrade the engines from the XSOAR server UI, if you used a different installation method then you have to log into the engine and upgrade it manually. Whenever the main XSOAR server is upgraded (whether a major or minor upgrade) the engines will show update required.
