Interface Names (for purposes of SNMP)

L1 Bithead

Is there any way to change the name or description of an interface in the device configuration? We use What's Up Gold to monitor most devices on our network- it walks SNMP and retrieves the default names just fine (mgmt, ha1, ethernet1/1, ethernet1/2, etc...).

I would like to name these to something more meaningful to me in my environment- I've used devices from Juniper in the past that allowed this.  Is there a way to do this with my PA-4020 running software version 3.1.9?

Output from SnmpB shows the following for the interface descriptions:

OID 1.3.6.1.2.1.2.2.1.2

35: ifDescr.1 mgmt
36: ifDescr.2 ha1
37: ifDescr.3 ethernet1/1
38: ifDescr.4 ethernet1/2
39: ifDescr.5 ethernet1/3
40: ifDescr.6 ethernet1/4

44: ifDescr.10 ethernet1/8
45: ifDescr.11 ethernet1/9
46: ifDescr.12 ethernet1/10
47: ifDescr.13 ethernet1/11
48: ifDescr.14 ethernet1/12
49: ifDescr.15 ethernet1/13
50: ifDescr.16 ethernet1/14

51: ifDescr.17 ethernet1/15
52: ifDescr.18 ethernet1/16
53: ifDescr.19 ethernet1/17
54: ifDescr.20 ethernet1/18
55: ifDescr.21 ethernet1/19
56: ifDescr.22 ethernet1/20
57: ifDescr.23 ethernet1/21
58: ifDescr.24 ethernet1/22
59: ifDescr.25 ethernet1/23

OID 1.3.6.1.2.1.31.1.1.1

1: ifName.1 mgmt
2: ifName.2 ha1
3: ifName.3 ethernet1/1
4: ifName.4 ethernet1/2
5: ifName.5 ethernet1/3
6: ifName.6 ethernet1/4
7: ifName.7 ethernet1/5
8: ifName.8 ethernet1/6
9: ifName.9 ethernet1/7
10: ifName.10 ethernet1/8

11: ifName.11 ethernet1/9
12: ifName.12 ethernet1/10
13: ifName.13 ethernet1/11
14: ifName.14 ethernet1/12
15: ifName.15 ethernet1/13
16: ifName.16 ethernet1/14
17: ifName.17 ethernet1/15
18: ifName.18 ethernet1/16
19: ifName.19 ethernet1/17
20: ifName.20 ethernet1/18

21: ifName.21 ethernet1/19
22: ifName.22 ethernet1/20
23: ifName.23 ethernet1/21
24: ifName.24 ethernet1/22
25: ifName.25 ethernet1/23
26: ifName.26 ethernet1/24

I am not sure which of the two OIDs software like What's Up or Solarwinds would pull name or description from.

Thanks-

Hello and thank you for your question,

No iteration of the PANOS currently supports this type of customization. If you feel this is a valuable feature that should be added to our product line I strongly encourage you to contact your local SE and ask them to create a Feature request on your behalf.

Thank you,

If you use the comment field in the UI / CLI for additional information you can get that retrieved using the ifAlias object from the ifXTable in the IF-MIB.
