Device connection alert

L0 Member

Hi everyone,
I'm kind of new to the Palo Alto Networks ecosystem, and it seems that in Cortex XDR, you can't create your own "alerts", only queries/scheduled queries.
My goal here is to find a way to be alerted/informed when a specific device is connected to the internet. For more context, it would more specifically used for stolen laptops, so that is the thief connects to the internet for whatever reason (we can imagine that the stolen laptop was not logged out, or that the thief finds the credentials) Cortex would alert me, or at least notify me directly when it happens.
For the moment, the only way i found to do this is to schedule a query, but the best i can do is a daily execution, while i'd hoped for a more "instantaneous" report.
I was hoping that there would be a better/cleaner solution to do this,

Thanks in advance for your answers.

Hi @G.Louhou

Thank you for your interesting query on LC!

First of all, your assumption might be wrong- CortexXDR has different features and rules like IOC, BIOC & correlation rules etc that you can make use of to create your own custom alerts that match specific behaviour.

To achieve your requirement,  maybe custom BIOC rule would be a good idea.
You can make use of Network BIOC rule so that when the stolen device is connected to internet or agent becomes active, NETWORK BIOC—can alert about the events relating to incoming and outgoing traffic.
Reference - https://docs-cortex.paloaltonetworks.com/r/Cortex-XDR/Cortex-XDR-Pro-Administrator-Guide/Create-a-BI...
There is also a feature of adding the BIOC to restriction profile if you want to block certain actions.

We also have a feature like alert notification forwarding over email that you can make use of - https://docs-cortex.paloaltonetworks.com/r/Cortex-XDR/Cortex-XDR-Pro-Administrator-Guide/Configure-N...

Additionally, if you want to spice up things- you can test features like endpoint isolation, host firewall & live terminal that may be helpful in this use case.

Give it a like or mark this response as solution if this added value to your query.

Best,
Naveen
